Methodology & Inspiration

Inspired by an earlier piece of ebonised art with square blocks found sitting on my coffee table. I wanted to make a standalone one off piece of bespoke furniture that you just couldn't buy. It had to be made of locally sourced Oak here in Scotland and be unique in its design and form. Steering clear of what might be called a conventional designed sideboard it had to be both functional and practical in its use but more dramatically different in the way it looked.

Timber selection for furniture making

Ebonised Oak provides a striking contrast when paired with Natural Oak as it offers a sleek, modern look to add drama and sophistication to any handmade bespoke furniture.

While ebonising the Oak alters the color of the wood, it generally preserves the natural texture and grain pattern.

Natural Oak and ebonised Oak contrast beautifully together, creating visual interest and adding depth to the design. The dark richness of ebonised Oak complements the warm, natural tones of oak, resulting in a striking appearance. The Geo Sideboard in profile shows, the straight grain of the Oak drawers running horizontally from one drawer to the next.

With its striking ebonised sides and rectangular open blocked legs - it's a bold piece of furniture.
