Pantry Cupboard

The Handmade Cupboard with a Hidden Secret

Sometimes, the best furniture isn’t just about looking good—it has to solve a problem too. This handmade wooden cupboard does exactly that. Standing at two meters tall, it looks like a beautifully crafted storage unit, finished in a rich blue-green with oak handles. But hidden inside is something unexpected—a boiler.

Designed as three separate stacked cupboards, this bespoke furniture had to be lightweight so each section could be lifted off easily for servicing. It was also attached to the wall using French cleats for secure yet removable installation.

Methodology & Inspiration

Concelment

The idea for this cupboard came from a need to conceal a boiler while keeping the space visually appealing. The client wanted something that looked like a stylish piece of bespoke furniture rather than a typical bulky boiler cupboard.

Assembly

The challenge was making it easy to disassemble while still feeling like a seamless, well-designed unit. The solution was to build three individual cupboards that stacked together neatly, allowing for both functionality and aesthetics. With each one being handmade and handcrafted to fit the triangular space.

Ventilation

One of the biggest design considerations was airflow. Boilers need proper ventilation, so subtle air vents were added between each cupboard section to allow air to circulate freely without disrupting the overall look. These vents were worked into the design in a way that felt intentional rather than an afterthought.

Location, Location

Another major challenge was the space itself—the kitchen corner where the unit was going wasn’t square. It had three different angled walls, meaning each cupboard had to be triangular in shape. This made the build much more complex, requiring precise measurements and careful construction to ensure everything fit perfectly.

The choice of materials played a big role in making this work. Birch plywood was used because it’s both strong and lightweight, which was crucial since each cupboard had to be lifted off individually.

The blue-green paint gave it a characterful, stylish finish, while the oak handles added a warm, natural contrast. Everything was designed with care to ensure that, despite its hidden function, the cupboard was still a beautiful piece of bespoke handmade furniture that truly enhanced the space.

Custom made furniture

What makes this cupboard special is its secret. To anyone walking into the room, it looks like a simple, well-made storage unit. But open the doors, and you’ll find a hidden boiler tucked neatly inside.

Thanks to the French cleat system, each section can be removed easily when it’s time for maintenance. The combination of lightweight construction and secure mounting made it both practical and visually seamless—exactly what the client wanted.

In the end, this cupboard is proof that functional design doesn’t have to be boring. It was a challenging build, but the end result is a unique, custom-made piece that not only serves a purpose but also adds to the beauty of the space.

Whether it’s admired for its craftsmanship or appreciated for its clever hidden feature, this cupboard is a reminder that good handcrafted furniture is about more than just looks—it’s about making life easier while still looking great.

Timber selection for furniture making

Birch plywood furniture

Furniture-grade birch plywood is the ideal choice for this cupboard due to its strength, stability, and smooth finish. Given that the cupboard needed to be lightweight yet sturdy enough to support its own structure while being lifted on and off, birch plywood was the perfect balance of durability and ease of handling to make this bespoke furniture.
